CBS News is seeking an experienced Field Producer based in Hong Kong to join our Asia newsgathering operations, covering one of the world's most dynamic regions. This role demands a seasoned journalist capable of originating, developing, and executing high-quality content for CBS News broadcast programs as well as streaming, social and digital platforms.
The ideal candidate thrives under pressure in demanding environments, brings a deep understanding of the region, and has the technical skills to function as a self-sufficient unit when the situation requires. They should also have a strong understanding of American network news style and story judgement, both for hard news and feature stories. The position will work directly with CBS News’s Hong Kong-based correspondent and will report to the London bureau.
Key Responsibilities
• Pitch, develop, and produce original stories for all CBS News platforms, including both breaking news and enterprise stories
• Deploy rapidly to breaking news events across the region, including conflict zones, natural disasters, political upheaval, and humanitarian emergencies
• Cultivate and maintain a broad network of sources across government, military, NGO, and local journalists throughout Asia
• Arrange interviews and locations under strict deadlines
• Coordinate with fixers, translators, and local crews
• Conduct thorough pre-deployment risk assessments
• Serve as the secondary camera on shoots, and at times be the primary camera
• Monitor regional news and serve as the network’s eyes on the coverage area.
• Along with traditional broadcast platforms, contribute text stories for CBSNews.com and social media content
Basic Qualifications
• 5–10 years of professional experience in broadcast journalism, with a significant portion in field production
• A track record of coverage in active conflict zones and major natural disasters
• Proficiency with DSLR camera systems and experience editing in both Adobe Premiere Pro and Avid Media Composer
• Extensive experience with transmission systems including LiveU, Starlink, and satellite phones
• Strong news judgment and a track record of breaking original stories
• Operate safely and effectively in hostile environments in compliance with CBS News safety protocols
Desired Qualifications
• Prior experience based or extensively deployed in the Asia-Pacific region
• In-depth knowledge of regional geopolitical dynamics such as China-Taiwan relations and Korean Peninsula security, as well as economic and technology power players
• Experience producing for long-form documentary or magazine show formats
• Familiarity with CBS News editorial standards, style, and production workflows
• Fluency in English required; proficiency in Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, or another major Asian language is a significant advantage
