This is a great opportunity for a Senior Journalist to join the CBS News London Bureau, as Deputy Bureau Chief. The candidate will report to the Bureau Chief, be an integral part of London Bureau management and be prepared to travel internationally.
What will you be doing?
- Stand-in for Bureau Chief in the office and the field, including appropriate internal and external meetings/events.
- Travel where required.
- Member of the crisis management team with some responsibility for staff working in conflict zones and for travelling staff care before, during and after assignments.
- Assist BC to check and sign-off risk assessments into hostile environments when required.
- Participate in finance and strategy discussions as part of the bureau and department management team.
- Participate in daily and weekly editorial and budget meetings in the bureau.
- Develop and manage relationships with external partners and broadcast partners such as FBS, TBS and BBC.
- Work with HR on recruitment, training and development, welfare, performance reviews and any other staff issues
- Working with BC and Planning producer, plan for future events and ensure coverage via the diary system and super-desk/Wolftech and project manage large news events and major breaking news – including from the field.
- Alongside the BC and Planning Producer lead the scheduling of bureau staff/freelance employees across Newsdesk, Coord, Library, Cameras and Editing.
- With management, maintain weekly budget responsibilities for freelance hires and general bureau spending.
- Assist with the scheduling of all correspondents and producers and other editorial contributors
- Assist management of outpost staff across the globe and hiring local producers, crews, editors and drivers internationally.
- Supervise the Newsdesk with logistics for travelling colleagues including visas, accreditation, flights, hotels, transport.
- Foreign Embassy Liaison: meet and build relationships with Embassies and Consulates to ensure timely visa processing along with the planning producer.
- New technology – lead the implementation, testing and running of new technologies including liaising with external providers
What are we looking for?
The Deputy Bureau Chief will have extensive journalistic experience. They must have strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to build positive relationships across the organisation. The ability to help journalists identify stories and open doors that allow for the building of journalistic networks and the development of critical sources. They will work effectively with colleagues across all levels of the organisation. Excellent organisational and communication (oral and written) skills are required with the capability of balancing many projects and priorities at one time.
