Director, Editorial and Social Video

We are looking for a creative, dogged, and news-obsessed producer to join the Free Press team. In this role, you’ll work closely with on-screen talent and producers to oversee multiple weekly social videos, news videos, and series, covering current events, domestic politics, foreign policy, culture and tech. 

You’ll own the process end-to-end—overseeing weekly social publishing strategy, generating ideas, sharpening pitches, guiding scripts, shaping edits, and delivering videos that are high quality, compelling, and original. This is a role for someone who can move quickly without sacrificing quality, has strong editorial instincts, and knows how to turn complex topics into videos people want to watch.

Responsibilities:

• Work closely with talent to develop formats, series, and distinct on-screen voices. Guide and refine talent’s voice to ensure clarity, authority, and editorial excellence
• Pitch sharp, timely ideas to talent and team–and elevate others’ pitches–at the pace of the news cycle. Identify high-caliber, relevant guests to book.
• Lead and manage high-quality episode production across the team, with some hands-on producing of field and studio shoots
• Collaborate with video editors and producers in post to shape raw conversations into clear, engaging videos that reflect The Free Press’s editorial voice
• Identify and package standout moments for clips that have maximum reach and impact
• Manage calendars, timelines, and communication to ensure consistent, on-time delivery that is varied and strategic over the course of the week
• Spot and pursue big opportunities to grow the brand–pushing forward concepts, formats, and audience reach

Qualifications:

• 5+ years leading production on digital video, news podcasts, or similar editorial content
• Strong editorial judgment, with a track record of turning complex ideas into compelling video
• Deep knowledge of the media landscape and a strong instinct for what will resonate right now
• Experience working directly with talent and shaping their voice and output
• Fluency with basic production tools and workflows (e.g., microphones, cameras, platforms like Riverside)
• Ability to operate at a fast pace, including responding to breaking news outside standard hours when needed
• Have experience and a hunger to use AI tools, learning from them to improve both tactical and strategic choices for the role
• Passion for The Free Press’s mission and curiosity about ideas across the political and cultural spectrum

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Hiring Salary Range: $130,000.00 - 150,000.00. 

The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York City, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.  The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable,  as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is bonus eligible.
