Overview:

The Director of Managing Editorial will lead the executive team in planning and production of all publishing processes. This role includes overseeing the vision for metadata. This dynamic, solution-minded person will manage all operations and make sure timelines, budgets, workflows, and quality expectations are met. They will also collaborate closely with editorial, design, sales, marketing, and external partners, marketing, and external partners. The Director will play a strategic role in creating and developing scalable workflows and supporting the department’s publishing goals.
 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee all managing editorial processes across the business, from manuscript handoff through publication.
  • Establish and maintain production schedules to ensure deadlines and launch commitments are met.
  • Monitor workloads, prioritize projects, and allocate resources appropriately.
  • Ensure adherence to editorial standards, brand guidelines, and quality benchmarks.
  • Define and own metadata strategy, standards, and governance, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and scalability across all editorial content.
  • Partner with product, SEO, data, and technology teams to optimize discoverability.
  • Coordinate with authors, freelancers, and vendors as needed.
  • Oversee editorial and production budgets, including freelance costs and vendor expenses.
  • Negotiate and manage relationships with freelancers and external service providers.
  • Track costs and identify efficiencies without compromising quality.
  • Evaluate and improve publishing workflows, tools, and systems.
  • Develop best practices to support growth, new formats, and changing business needs.
  • Contribute to publishing planning, forecasting, and strategic initiatives.
  • Resolving complex production or workflow challenges tranquilly and successfully.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in managing editorial or editorial operations within publishing.
  • Proven experience building and managing complex publishing schedules.
  • Deep comprehension of the publishing process from manuscript to finished product.
  • Experience managing budgets and working with freelancers and vendors.
  • Preferred experience at a publishing imprint or multi-list environment.
  • Knowledge with production workflows, digital publishing, and metadata standards.
  • Experience leading operational change or scaling editorial systems.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

 

Hiring Salary Range: $135,000.00 - 150,000.00. 

 

The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York City, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.  The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable,  as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is bonus eligible.
