CBS News is seeking a dynamic and hardworking social media professional to join our intrepid, fast-paced digital media social team in a leadership position and oversee social media producers in the production of articles, videos and share language to grow the CBS News brand on various platforms!
The ideal candidate will be proficient in the standard processes of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, as demonstrated by their active social media profiles and portfolio of work. They will need to understand the most current content strategies used by these platforms and be equipped to create videos, articles, headlines and share language that best play to each of those platform strategies. Qualified candidates will have experience covering breaking news and the proven ability to write thoughtful, catchy and accurate language on news in a variety of topics. They need to be able and willing to work newsroom hours, which include nights, weekends and holidays. Experience managing a team, identifying which trending stories are worth pursuing, giving productive mentorship and strategically navigate problem solving situations on the fly is a must. They also need flawless editorial judgment and the ability to work with high-powered talent.
The duties of the Director, Social Media will include, but will not be limited to:
- Analyze social data and analytics to make decisions and inform strategy
- Identify and assign trending stories of value to social producers
- Identify which segments will work as social video, which as articles and which as both
- Edit social videos, headlines and share language submitted by producers on the team
- Give guidance on best practices and strategy for the numerous social platforms
- Provide direction on scripts and composition
- Copyedit social language
- Conceptualize special social-first projects for anchors and correspondents, then see them through to fruition
- Manage schedules, pitches and personnel issues as they arise
- Participate in interdepartmental brainstorms, offering feedback from a social perspective
Candidate qualifications:

8+ years of social media experience and/or experience in a digital or broadcast newsroom
- Strong social media skills with demonstrated portfolio of work
- Ability to multitask and perform at the highest levels under stress and tight deadlines
- Great teammate who is able to work with a diverse group of people
- Deep familiarity with social media audiences, standard processes and analytics
- Strong writing and editing skills with demonstrated portfolio of published work
- Proven leadership skills
- Adaptable hours including evenings, weekends and holidays
- Degree or equivalent experience in journalism, communications or related
- Strong writing, grammar and AP style background
- Strong news judgment and instincts

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Hiring Salary Range: $100,000.00 - 130,000.00.
The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is bonus eligible.
