Sr Producer, CBS Detroit

CBS Detroit is seeking a Senior Producer to join our dynamic team of journalists to help shape and lead our morning news coverage. This position will take the lead in producing the 6 a.m. newscast while also supporting the Morning Show Executive Producer in managing and driving editorial decisions for the full morning block. We’re looking for a creative, collaborative newsroom leader who thrives under deadlines, accepts innovation, and inspires a team committed to impactful, community-driven journalism.
Core Responsibilities:
- Lead production of the 6:00 a.m. newscast, ensuring it is urgent, enlightening, and engaging for our audience across platforms.
- Collaborate daily with the Morning Show Executive Producer to guide editorial vision and maintain high journalistic standards throughout the entire morning show.
- Serve as a mentor and resource for producers, writers, reporters, and editors, providing constructive feedback and support in their professional development.
- Participate in morning editorial meetings, contributing to story selection, content development, and live coverage planning.
- Oversee script writing and copy editing to ensure accuracy, clarity, and fairness.
- Coordinate with assignment editors, reporters, anchors, and technical staff to ensure seamless execution of newscasts.
- Make informed, real-time decisions in the control room, particularly during breaking news situations.
- Adopt CBS Detroit’s dedication to Getting Answers with local storytelling that elevates underrepresented voices and reflects the diversity of our community.
Preferred Skills:
- Proven experience managing breaking news and live content in a fast-paced control room environment.
- Familiarity with tools such as iNews, Crispin, and non-linear video editing software.
- Strong understanding of digital and streaming platforms and how to integrate content across broadcast and digital.
- Ability to pitch, book, and produce impactful segments and interviews.
- Skilled communicator with excellent editorial judgment and organizational skills.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5+ years of experience producing newscasts in a medium to large market.
- Prior experience in newsroom leadership or team coordination is strongly preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in journalism, communications, or a related field.
- Flexibility to work early mornings, overnights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Deep interest in local news and issues that matter to viewers in the Detroit region.
