The CBS News Political Unit is seeking a creative and enthusiastic producer with strong political expertise and editorial judgment, field production experience, and excellent broadcast script writing skills to join the Washington, DC team!

 

This producer will pitch and develop political news and political feature stories for day of air and future planning. They work very closely with the Political correspondents in Washington and will be responsible for story production from concept to broadcast, while collaborating with the Political Director, Executive and Senior Producers for the Evening News and CBS Morning News and other political broadcast platforms including streaming and dot com.

 

Candidates must have the ability to make quick and thoughtful decisions, crash stories under tight deadline, and work with the editor to produce visually compelling segments. It is essential that this producer demonstrate initiative by making calls and coming up with creative angles and bookings for fast-paced news cycle, as well as do political reporting. The selected candidate must possess excellent interpersonal skills, a willingness to work in a collaborative manner, and an enthusiasm for politics, news and storytelling.

 

Skills/experience

  • Bachelors Degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of editorial experience working in production is preferred.
  • Experience in a broadcast news environment.
  • Firm command and understanding of politics is required.
  • Must have solid news judgment and experience chasing breaking news.
  • Proficiency in the broadcast newsgathering process
  • Must be an excellent writer with well-developed oral communication skills, especially when working on sensitive stories.
  • Must be able to juggle and prioritize multiple pieces with different deadlines: short, medium, and long-term.
  • Proven experience in the field, managing story development and leading newsgathering efforts, especially in breaking news situations
  • Thrives in fast paced and deadline driven situations.
  • Passion for politics, news, journalism, and storytelling is required
  • Ability to shoot video with prosumer-grade equipment from the field is required.
  • Ability to work long hours as news dictates which could include working on regular days off, weekends and overnight, especially during the campaign season
  • Ability and willingness to work to travel with short notice, including overnight travel as news warrants
