CBSNews.com is hiring a general assignment reporter to pitch and write stories for our politics vertical! This reporter will contribute to breaking news coverage, writing quick, accurate copy on deadline and coordinating with the growth, search and social teams to amplify reporting. They will flex between quick-turn, high-interest news of day segments, topical explainers and longer form features. This role thrives in a fast-paced environment and is adept at balancing a number of stories and coverage areas on deadline.

 

The hours for this role are Sunday-Thursday, 7a-3p ET. You will need to work some holidays and shift your schedule as news breaks.

 

Your day to day:

  • Pitch and write daily stories on deadline

  • Identify trending topics and high-interest angles to cover
  • Pivot to cover breaking news as needed
  • Contribute to CBSNews.com live blogs
  • Write up broadcast scripts and newsmaking network interviews for CBSNews.com
  • Work with the video team to get clips posted online to embed within segments
  • Scan competitors, social media, Google Trends, Dataminr and beyond for story ideas
  • Send push alerts and breaking emails as needed
  • Use data to inform decisions

 

What you bring to the team:

  • You have 3+ years of experience in a digital breaking news environment and proven ability to react quickly as news develops

  • You have prior experience working for a news website and in content management systems
  • You are a skilled writer who can produce quality copy on a deadline
  • You're deeply familiar with analytics platforms like Google Analytics, Omniture, Chartbeat and Parse.ly
  • You are a standout colleague who loves to work across many teams
