POSITION: Freelance Social Media Producer - temporary position (seven months)

Job Description


CBS News is seeking a smart and capable Social Media Producer with a passion for news to join our team and help us optimize the biggest stories of the day for social platforms. This person will cover social media for three of our Owned and Operated stations – Boston, New York and Colorado. We are looking for a hardworking journalist, who thrives in a fast paced environment and has strong editorial judgment that can readily be applied in breaking news situations. This job requires excellent time management, the ability to pivot between several tasks and awareness of news of day in three different markets. This candidate must be able to produce and edit videos that will engage audiences on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X and Snapchat – utilizing in-platform tools and features to create content that is authentic to the audiences on those platforms. The candidate must have an eye for the most newsworthy and shareable moments within larger news events, press conferences, interviews, articles and television segments. The candidate must be well-versed in the production techniques and best practices for creating vertical social videos, still graphics, Instagram carousels and link posts to articles. This producer will also be fielding content from anchors and correspondents in the field, and crafting those assets into original social packages. They must be able to write language for captions and titles that is simultaneously concise and shareable, yet fully in context and in line with the CBS News brand. They must have experience covering breaking news. They must be able and willing to work newsroom hours, which may include nights, weekends and holidays. They must contribute to the continued growth of the accounts to which they’re assigned, including but not limited to metrics like followers, video views and engagement. And they must be fast and responsive when news breaks.

 

Candidate qualifications:

  • 2 to 4 years of social media or newsroom experience
  • Deep familiarity with social media platforms, audiences and best practices
  • The ability to write about about a variety of topics in a strong, yet unbiased way
  • Strong writing skills with demonstrated portfolio of published work
  • Strong producing and editing skills
  • Ability to quickly and accurately subtitle video for social, using both editing platforms and the
    text tools within TikTok and Instagram
  • Ability to work well with others under tight deadlines
  • Degree in journalism, communications or related
